June 2018: The Riches of a Post-Communion Prayer

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Here is the opening paragraph of one of our Post-Communion prayers.

‘Father of all, we give you thanks and praise,
that when we were still far off
you met us in your Son and brought us home.’

A prayer that packs a lot of imagery into a few lines. It is one of my favourites!

‘Dying and living, he declared your love,
gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory.’

As we leave the Great Fifty Days of Easter in the past for another year and move into ‘Ordered’ Time, counting the Sundays of Trinity, it might make a good ‘Aide Memoire’ for you to take through the Summer days.

Having reminded us of the parable of the Prodigal Son, the writer reminds us about the Easter message of hope and new life filled with God’s grace and glory.

‘May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life;
we who drink his cup bring life to others; ..’

Like the apostles, saints and martyrs we drink his cup.

Given his light at Easter and set on fire with the Holy Spirit at Pentecost we must now fulfil our responsibilities by giving that light back to the world.

‘.. we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.’

The prayer finishes with a glance back to the story of God’s people in the Old Testament, being led out of slavery &ndash

‘Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us,
so we and all your children shall be free,

and then forward to the Easter message of hope for the whole world which we celebrate on every Sunday throughout the year!

‘ - and the whole earth live to praise your name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.’

Summer Blessings upon each one of you.
